| Plot | Master Sergeant Johnny Gallagher (Gene Hackman) is pulled from a failed Berlin security perimeter after a senior officer is assassinated and a prisoner escort collapses under suspicious circumstances. Tasked with transporting a detainee, he loses custody during a coordinated extraction and is framed for murder when the detainee's wife is killed. As Gallagher is drawn deeper into an opaque chain of military deception, he links the impostor identity to Thomas Boyette (Tommy Lee Jones), a disciplined covert operative moving through institutional gaps. With help from Lt. Colonel Eileen Gallagher (Joanna Cassidy) and Lt. Ruth Butler (Pam Grier), he traces the conspiracy across Germany and Chicago, where a final assassination plot targets Soviet leadership during a staged diplomatic appearance. |
